The Charles D. Brower Papers consist of one daybook kept by Brower in 1898-1939, one microfiche copy of the daybook, the typescript of a talk given by Brower at the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines in November 1934, and a newspaper article about the talk. The daybook records the quantities of whalebone (baleen), ivory, and furs Brower shipped and mailed from his trading post in Alaska, primarily to H. Liebes & Company of San Francisco. It lists packages shipped, the contents of each package (by weight for whalebone and ivory, by item for furs), and postage fees, but no prices or values for the goods shipped. Point of shipment for most years is listed as CST (Cape Smyth Trading Post), but in the early 1920s Icy Reef, Barter Island, and Beechey Point are also mentioned. Pasted into the book in the early years are receipts from vessel captains for freight received. At the end of the book is a list of individual workers (no surnames or dates) with hours worked and itemized in-kind payments in lieu of wages (pp. 186-191) and a list of goods wanted (for trade?) in 1939 (p. 199).
